HAMUA NATIVE RESERVES.
DEPUTATION TO MINISTER
(By Telegraph—Press Association.)
WELLINGTON., Last Night. A deputation of settlers from Hamua waited on the Acting-Premier today, and asked that arrangements be made whereby they could get a renewal of their nearly-expired leases from the Natives. . ,
The Minister said that the position •was a difficult one, because there was no provision in the law by which he could compel an owner to lease land. In this case the owner took exception to some statements about Maoris and their land, with the result that he wanted to keep this land and show that his people were not lazy, and could work their own land industriously. If the settlers "were certain they could make arrangements with the Natives and obtain fresh leases on satisfactory terms, the Government would remove the proclamation and point out to the Native chief the desirability of retaining good tenants.
