THE CHIEF JUSTICE.
The Chief Justice of New Zealand is -allowing himself, to be brought into , perilously, close relationishjip ;to active politics. His attempt ■ to evolve a Native land policy for tlhe Government was quite near enough, to the border-line. His latest mission, however, to investigate ' certaincharges ■ against- the administration of Rarotonga, may involve him in unpleasant difficulties. It, hardly comes within the jurisdiction of "the judicial Bench to do what may be vulgarly termed the "dirty work" of the Government. The drudges should be kept as free as possible from admi nisfcraitive work, or the judiciary will be brought into disrepute.
