ALLEGED PEARL POACHING

TWO SCHOONERS SEIZED. (Received This Morning, 12.45 o'clock.) "PERTH, May 31. The gunboat Gayundah towed to Broome two pearling schooners, the Harriet and the Firtiura, flying the Dutch flag, and handed them over to the Customs authorities. They were seized for alleged pearl poaching. MELBOURNE, May 31. The Minister of Customs explains the seizure of the schooners. ■He says that for a considerable time the Customs Department has been closely watching the visits of foreign vessels to tho Westralian coasts and without authority or recognition of the laws, engaging in pearling and other fishing. The foreign vessels were manned by Eastern crews. Besides the loss of revenue in the foreigners failing to pay duty on dutiable goods, there was a danger of the introduction of contagious diseases by undesirable aliens. It was decided that a gunboat should patrol the coast from Thursday Island to Geraldton. The Minister has not yet decided what to do with the captured schooners.
