Mr F. W. H. Kumnier, of Masterton, has been elected a Vive-President of the New Zealand Chess Association.
A.London cable states that Sir William S. Gilbert, the well-known dramatist, died from heart failure while bathing.- The late Sir W. S. Gilbert, who was associated with the late Mr Sullivan in the production of many operas, was born in 1836, and educated in Ealing and London University.
Leave of absence was granted at the meeting of the Wellington Education Board yesterday to Mrs J. Horghan, of Featherston, Miss Messenger, of Matahiwi, and Mr Jones, of Te Ore Ore, all on account of ill-health.
Miss C. Simmons has resigned her position as assistant teacher at Hukanui; Miss E. Bannister as assistant at Hastwell; and Miss G. Ross as solo teacher at Hinemoa.
Messrs W. H. Beetham, L. G. Reid, S.M., and A. Jv Rutherford, of the ■Wairarapa, have been elected VicePresidents of the Wellington Acclimatisation Society. Messrs W. Barton, D. McGregor, F. C. Turnor, and W. Wakeman have been appointed to the Council of the Societv.
Inspector Tennant, of the Wellington Board, leaves New Zealand on a trip to the Old Courrtfy on Juno 7th. ,
. Mr Stanley Hogg, son of Mr A. W.Hogg, M.P., has received a tempo rary appointment in the Census Department, Wellington. Mrs Alexander Mntrie, of Masterton, has received news of the deatli of her brother, Mr Edward Murray Kelleher, at the Melborne Hospital, at the age of 62. Deceased was a draftsman in the office of his brother, Mr John Kelleher, of Masterton, the latter being the chief surveyor in the district for many years. H/i was held.in much esteem by-a large.circle of friends, many of whom are still resident in Masterton. Miss Kelleher, teacher at the Kaituna school, is a nieco of the deceased.
Word was received by telephone yesterday, from Glenburn, that the two-year old son of Mr H. Bunny had sustained a compound fracture of the leg. Tt appears tho child had that morning been riding a dog, and was thrown off its back with tho result stated. Dr. Prior, of Mastertfm. was sent for, and promptly arrived by motor cycle and fixed up the fracture. The little fellow is progressing at latest reports as well as can be expected .
