AKURA CROSSING.

{To Thf, Editor, i ' ' I Sir, — In a town 'like Masterton, j which -deservedly boasts of .so' many 'beauty ispots, the attention of the ■powers that ibe should he forcibly di- | rected to the Akura railway crossing and its surroundings. In the first ;place, fine footpaths do not- deserve tlie name, and as for the road, it is r-a veritable sea of maid after a few ; rain .showers. I pity those couples who venture down this ;road ifor a puff of the fresh mountain air in the evenings. . I specially refer to that portion of the road, from the ci\>&siag;"to, the butter factory. It is .within the Borough boundary, and the Boav ough Council is therefore responsible. There is also a so-called street 'lamp in the vicinity,, and instead of< giving it the appellation of a lamp it should %emled a "star of the loweife magnitude." Another matter that should come under the notice of the Borough Councillors- is that fronting Lincoln Road, next .Mr Daniell's factory, is a gorse hedge and dilapidated post and .rail fenee, erected about the time of "The Barmecides." Surely the improvements needed will not entail a big outlay, and for ttihe sake of the traveling public .and, visitors, who come to see Masterton, these defects should be remedied at once. When conversing with a friend isome days ago, he casually remarked, when discussing these matters : "Don't you know the Borough Council cannot spend so .much money now on such improvements as they did a few years back, .because they lost a lot of money through the pubs, being shut, .no license fees, and gas revenue." Be that as it may, these defects .should he remedied at once. Thanking you in anticipation, and hoping you will have .something to sav in the matter. I am, etc., "IBEX."
