One of tthie imost important (Statements made 'by Mr W. H. Herries, M.P., in his recent speech at Palmerston. North, wa.s rthat df the Opposition were returned to power it would take immediate .steps .to reduce taxation. One of /the greatest reproaches attaching to tlhe Liberal Ajdmimisftration is that it has ibeen piling up taxation year by year, until existence in the country has hecome almost unbearable. The Customs tax in itself is a curse to the people. It is responsible, more than anything else, for the failure of men and women to do tlieir (duty iby the State, in the matter of parenthood. It is crushing the very existence out of "the country. ' Wtfaat can be thought of a Government which boasts its concern for the working' man, and extracts .from him nearly £3,000,000 a year in Custom's taxation alone P
