Mr A. H. Herbert, one of the Opposition candidates for the Masterton seat,-will address the electors in Mastertou on June 7th.

The Tarana,ki Education 3oard, at its meeting this week, passed a resolution of sympathy with Mr W. Rodgers, a member of the Board, in the loss sustained by him in the death of his son recently'in a fatality in the Wairarapa district. , The death is announced from Blenheim of Mr William Benoni Parker, J.P., aged 73. He arrived in New Zealand in 1861, and has resided in Marlborough since 1864. He leaves a widow and five sons. Makea Ariki, Queen of Raratoriga, died on May Ist, after a long illness* She was aged 72 and had reigned for forty years. The Resident Commissioner Visited the palace several times daily, and was with Makea when she died. When Makea was appointed 1 , Rangi was also nominated, and before she died Makea expressed a wish that. Rangi should succeed. This wish will probably be given effect to by the Federal' Council, the body lay in state for three days, and the funeral was an imposing one. The usual tangi was held.
It is reported (states Friday's 51ataura Ensign) that Mr J. R. Hamirton, of Winton, has consented to contest the A warn a seat against Sir Joseph Ward. Mr Hamilton hp~. for several years represented the Winton riding of the Southland County Council, and is 'favourably known in politics. . . ....... . i
