TRUST LANDS TRUST ELECTION.
MEETING AT KURIPUNI
A meeting of tho Mastert-dn Trust liands Trust voters was held in the Kuripuni Hall last evening. Mr J. G. Mackay presided over a fair attendance. •.
Mr Robinson said it was suggested in yesterday morning's Age that he had no policy. Yet for years he had advocated the founding of an institution in Masterton. It was impossible to go further until the publio had endorsed the proposal. Then it would be time to procure facts and figures concerning the establishment of an institution'. If the public fell in with the suggestion the Trustees as a whole would certainly take the matter up. He urged the necessity of the voters taking a broad view, and not casting their vote on some side issue.
Mr Pauling said he was purely an outsider, and knew very little concerning the inside working of the Trust, He considered that up to the present the income of the Trust had not warranted the founding of an institution, but it had been in the eye of the public for some time. Mr Robinson was not the founder of the suggestion. Mr Pauling said he was not in favour of the ity system. He considered the scholarship grants were too small , but too many, and he intended to do his best, if returned, to put the system on a better footing. Mr Pragnell said he tlrought that it would be a good idea to have a member to represent Kuripuni, and the thought tiwas very fortunate that Mr Pauling had become a candidate. Contiuing. Mr Pragnell said Mr Krahagen had made a very good suggestion. That was that the Srust lease its section at Kuripuni to the Government for the erection of workers' dwellings. He supported Mr Pauling in the matter that the scholarship grants were, too many, because. they ' had gone beyond, the boundisryj With , regard to the establishment of an institution, Mr Pragnell said that he .advocated the proposal when he stood for a seat thirteen years aa;p. He had got the, suggestion from Mr Daniel!, ~ j so that Mr Robinson was not the originator. The public apathy in connection with the Trust was deplorable. It was said that the interest was a good deal greater at the pjresent time, but that was to be proved by the number that recorded their votes. Personally, Mr Pragnell said, he did not mind whether he was elected or not, so long as the> people would take sufficient interest, to vote.
On the motion of Mr Hebenton, seconded by Mr Hyde, the speakers were accorded a hearty vote of thankr. A vote of thanks to the chairman closed the meeting.
