THE VANCOUVER SERVICE.
AUSTRALIAN CONCERN. United Press Association—xjy Electric Telegraph—Copyright. (Received May 23, 9 a.m.) SYDNEY, May 23. Mr Holman wrote Mr Hughes declaring that the State Government felt concern in the matter of the maintenance of a regular service between Sydney and Vancouver. The new contract between the Canadian and New Zealand Governments did not oblige the contractors to send steamei-s west of Auckland. The steamers will probably run to Australia, but New' Zealand has the preferenee*over space, apart from the consideration of the money annually expended in connection with the steamers on wages, coaling and docking, amounting to some £IOO,OOO. In view of the possibility of jeopardising Australian trade, he urged that Mr Fisher bo communicated with, with a view of approaching a conference with Sir Wilfrid Laurier. Mr Hughes replied that a representation on the matter has been forwarded to Mr Fisher. Mr Holman states that unless something is done, the State will consider the question of a contribution sufficient to secure space for the New South Wales.
