THE DEFENCE FORCE.

REGISTRATION IN MASTERTON,,

TEE CADET MOVEMENT.

In atmrepsaibbon with a repreßentafc* ive of the Age ' yesterday, Sergt.-» Major Area Officer for .the Wairarapa District, which extends from Eketahuiia to Gape Pailiser, ■ stated that so far about 900 Terri- j torials had enrolled in liis aim, This njumfoer he expected wouM be considerably increased before June 2nd", the date of the closing off application© for enrolment. So far as the Junior and Senior Cadets are concerned, he is endeavouring to form sections of companies in connection with the various churches. The full strength* of a section is thirty, and cf a company 120. It is expected tha/b a full company <wiM be formed in connection, with the Masterton churches. Each section, or unit, wouH/be per-* mitted to appoint its owtn nan-com-missioned officers. The object of allowing the churches to form sections was,to relieve'the Area Officer of some of 'the responisibilitaeis in connection .with drill. It was- also to enalble the sections to arrange drills which.'would not interfere with, the various forms of' sport in which the young people indulge. "If," said the Sergt.-Major, "the churches do not take the matter up and form Brigades similar to those in existence in the Old Country, I shall have to order drills which may interfere a good deal with the sports of the young .people. I have a wide district, and in my arrangements I cannot coansjder hockey or football." The Sergt.-Major stated that those cadets who did not enrol in church; unats would be required to form a separate company. In /the case of company drill, the whole of the Cadets would require to parade together. All boys attending primary schools must join a' Junior Cadet Corps, antl those who have left school, whether fourteen years of age or not, if under eighteen, must enrol with the Senior Cadets. So far as the outlying districts are concerned, it will be impassable to form sections, but the Sergt.-Major will arrange drills at suitable periods.
