CARTERTON.
| Mr F. Stempa had an excellent disl play of meat at his establishment on i Friday, which attracted a large numi ber of admirers. The beef display brought forth a good deal of comment upon its excellent quality. It was all purebred Shorthorn, grown on Mr Howard Booth's Carrington property. One beasE, which was a 26-year old heifer, tipped the scales at 8001bs, which goes close to a record for a heifer that age. The mutton was halfbred Southdown, from the farm of Mr R. G. Welch, Mataraua, and was carefully dressed in good English style. Messrs Gallon (Mataraua) and C. H. Hercock (Waihakeke) supplied the pork, and the lamb was from Mr Stempa's own farm. Mr Stempa is to be complimented upon the excellent | quality of the display, which he informs us, is the same year in and year \ out. j
The local Debating Society meets tonight, when a debate will be the order of the evening, the subject being, "That the labour legislation of New Zealand has been for the general good;" Mr B. Thompson, M.A., will determine to prove the reverse. , The Wairarapa and East Coast P. i and A. Society have granted the Wairarapa Hockey Association the use of j the showgrounds for hockey matches j at the same terms as last year.
MAURICEVILLE WEST* " In the face of a howling southerly, ten Hastwell shootists journeyed to Mauriceville' on Friday night to try conclusions with a local team on the Hazard target. Mr Fisher very kindly lent his Tiall for the occasion, and a very interesting shoot took place, the visitors being beaten by a margin of nineteen points. The. shooting was carried out at two ranges, 50ft and 30ft,six shots at each. The visitors were afterwards entertained with with supper. Following are the scores: — MAURICEVILLE.
T«NUI. The discussion which is going ;on over the Castlepointi County. Council clerkship is getting interesting, and people are asking, "What's wrong with Tinui?" Everybody knows the aggregation that is going on in land, and that there are not as many ratepayers here as there were a few years l ago. The, question now before the people is, is there going to /be aggregation in billets? If so, why not appoint the constable to be postmaster and parson? Then there would be two empty I houses, two less subscribers to the Wai-1 rarapa Age, two less customers at the j stores. 1 Well, why not shut the town-' ship up altogether and turn it into a | sheep paddock? ' .■ I If ever a place wants "Home j Rule," Tinui does. Are the present I generation going to see closer settle- < ment, or are they going (which they are) to drift backwards? During the last few years, seven settlers have sold v out to their neighbours and left the district, and as most of these ; settlers' had families, the loss to the school, churches, and business people is considerable. Are the people going to allow the land-grabbing capitalist to push them off their feeding-ground? Or, are they going to enforce their rights, and spread over the land and rear a healthy rural population?
Here we are, a few people on a lot of land, End still losing, population. Yet we are good people. There is no "sheep faking'," neither is there "sheep-taking" here, and the ladies do not wear "harem skirts." Yet wo are dying out!
