The Takapuna Jockey Club's winter meeting was opened to-day, in fin© weather. The course was in fas* going order, and the attendance large. Results :
Handicap Maiden Plate, seven furlongs.— Ruatangata, 1, Baku 2, St. Amans 3. Twelve others started. Won by a, length and a half.: Time, Iman. 33 '4-ssec.
First Pony Handicap, five and a . half furlongs.— Mighty Atom I, Miss, Stela 2, Red Lupin 3. Six others started. Won by three lengths. Time, lmin. 12 3-ssec. Empire Handicap, one mile and a lialf.— Domino 1, Sea Elf 2, Eleotrakoff 3. Eight others started. Won by threa lengths. Time, 2anin. 6 1-5 sec. Madden Hurdles, one mile and a half.— Miss Explosion 1, Captain Paul 2, Dearest 3. Six others started. Won easily by two lengths. Time, 3min. 7 l-ssec. Hauraki Hurdles, two miles.—Don Q"ex 1, Delegate 2, Sol 3. Three others started. Won by a length. Time, 3min. 56sec. Royal Handicap Sir Artegal 1, Elegance 2, Captain Soult 3. Sir others, (started. Won by a length and a half. Time, lmin. 33 2-ssec. Ngatarina Handicap, 5i furlongsLady Bettie 1, Blue Mount 2, Tiresome 3. Nine others, ran. Won by a couple of lengths. Time, lmin. 4 sec. During the running of the Ngatarina Handicap, Cbuntree fell, bringing down JoUi Fille and Falchion. O'Shea, /tibe rider of Countrep, sustained a fracture of the 'frontal bone of the iskuM, and was taken to a prir vate hospital. TURF NOTES. (By "Ginger.") The South Walrarapa i retting Club's annual race meeting, will be held on Saturday, June 3rd (on account of the holiday being observed on that day). The, close on Thursday, May 2oth, with"the secretary, Mr W. Armstrong, Greytown. The Wanganui meeting opens on Wednesday next. The Masitjertonowned Afterthought succeeded in getting only a third place at the Hawera meeting last week. Crusoe, a winner of the Feilding Cup, is at present being driven about Palinensiton in a cab. His companion in servitude is Goodform, by Formoaan—Wepener. Mr T. O'NeiH, of Palmerston, owner of Gladiole and Monologue, has purchased the stables and land at Awapuni previously owned by J. McKenzie. There are 38 boxes on the place, and it is quite likely Mr O'Neill will ibuaH a residence there. He has removed isoone of his brood mares and foals to the new property from Feilding, where they were previously running. J. Hatihawiay has a good looking adr ditiion to his stable in a gelding by Advance from lissette, by Niataitar. The youngster presents soimewfhait of a circus appearance, with a silver mane and tail, Ixut is weM and compactly ibuilt, and should be able to gallop.' Don Carlos was kicked by Passive on the Awapuni course, a few (mornings ago, and has eased up in his wiork.
While .schooling stt Lepperton re■cerotly, .the St. Paul gelding Valentine broke a small bone in a leg, but the bone has been set and an at*tempit null be made to save the house.
Bunkum was sold recently to Mr A. F. Douglas for 150 guineas. The M&lsiber—Lady Grafton- colt (2100 guineas), and the Po&rfeano— River Trent, colt (1800 guineas) have joined ex-jockey J. Barden'ts stable at Randiwick. Both of these yearlings were purchased at the recent sales by 'Mr' J". Brown', who* races under the name of "Jv Baron."
It transpires that Lady Medallist was purchased for a Queensland sportsman, probably Mr Blume. Lady Medallist goes to Brisbane, and it is intended' to ra.ce her there. They come idorro pretty heavy in Australia on horsemen who do no* satisfy the stewardis .with the way they handle their mounts. The crack rider, W. McLachlan, was recently fined £SO by the A.J.C. [stewards for gabbing -left on his' mount, Nangar, in the Local Handicap, and taking no part in the race. W. Young is mentioned as the likely pilot of Te Arai in the Wianganni Steeplechase. Young will hlave plenty of "good riding during the next few months, what with Attwood's team, Mr Jas. Bull's, and,' the Gasborne horses, Paisano and Continuance.
FairpHay, who won. the Grand National at Aintree in 1888, is /stall alive. He is mow thirty years old. Bis owner was asked recently for Ms opinion as to which was the <best 'cbaiser lie ever..saw, and in common with many other authorities on the subject he gave his vote to Cloister.
