A London cable states that His Majesty the King has approved of Senor Bayona being .appointed Spanish Consul for Australia and New Zealand. The death occurred at Stoney Creek last week'of Mr Carl William Berg, an c/Id resident of the jianawatu district. Mr C. H. Breize. of the Bank of New Zealand, Greytown, has been transferred to Leeston. Mr W. H. Herries, M.P., will deliver a political address at Palmerston North to-morrow. Mr P. O'Dea has announced his candidature for the Patea seat in the Liberal and Democratic interest. Mr Geoffrey Nye, wno visited Masterton recently as manager of "The Wanderers," will act as manager.of a company which has been formed in the South from the remnant cf the Hugh Ward Company. Mr R. McNab has announced his candidature for the Palmerston seat at the coming general election. Mr John Graham, senr., a wellknown West Coast settler, died last week at the Westland Hospital. He was one of the first to take up land in the Kokatahi Valley, where he had resided for over forty-live years. An effort is being made to induce Mr George Nelson to allow himself to be nominated for the Napier seat at the general election.
The death occurred at Greymouth on "Thursday of Mrs Hanwell Williams, a pioneer of the West Coast. Her husband died only ten days before, and the shock hastened her death.
Mr Primrose M'Connell, manager of the Moumahaki Experimental Farm, and Mr J. Lonsdale, manager of the State farm at Ruakura, are to exchange positions. A London cable states that Miss Vida Collins, the New Zealander, was beaten in the third round of the golf championship. A London cable announces the death of Mr J. G. Weir, the Liberal member ot the House of Commons for Ross and Cromarty.
The death of Mr C. Moberly Bell, the managing editor of the , London Times, was tragically sudden. He had just returned to his office after partaking of lunctf, when he was fatally seized, and died from heart failure. He attained his sixty-fifth year the previous Friday.
It is stated that Colonel Hayhurst, a relative of a former resident of Masterton, has been selected as the Opposition candidate for the Geraldine seat.
Mr E. B. Boss, M.P., was entertained at a complimentary social at Ti Tree Point on Wednesday night and presented with a purse of sovereigns. Eulogistic speeches were made by settlers, endorsing Mr Boss' actions and Lis conduct in Parliament. It is stated that, owing to the unsatisfactory state of his health, Mr J. Sevens will not be a candidate for the Manawatu seat at the coming election.
The death occurred at the Auckland Veterans' Home this week of Michael O'Donnell, a native of Tipperary, who saw active service with the 87th Regiment in the Indian Mutiny, and was granted the Indian Mutiny medal.
Mr L. R. Phillips, the present member of Parliament for Waitemata, will again contest the seat at the next general election.. Speaking at Puhoi on Friday, he definitely contradicted the statement that he intended to seek election "n the Kaipara electoral district.
The funeral at Eketahuna of the late Mr Andrew Douglas, of Te Wharau, was largely attended. The funeral service was conducted by the Rev. A. T. Thompson, of Masterton. The pallhearers were Messrs John Strang, Gladstone, C. Cameron. Flat Point, M. Smith, Gladstone, F. Richards, Masterton, and G. Simpson, Te Wharau. The coffin was covered with beautiful wreaths, one of which was of heather.
Mr C. J. Kent-Johnston, of Featherston, has received word of the death in Melbourne of his mother, after a short illness. The deceased lady, who was well-known to n number of Masterton residents, was the relict of the late Colonel J. Kent-Johnston, C. and T. Staff, England, who predeceased his ,late wife by some years. A grown up family consisting of Mr A. G. Kent-Johnston, London, England, Mr J. S. Kent-Johnston, Greytown, Mr C. J. Kent-Johnston, Featherston, and Miss Alice Kent-Johnston, Melbourne, are left to mourn the loss of their mother. The late Mrs KentJohnston was in her seventy-second year.
