CASTLEPOINT COUNTY CLERKSHIP.
[To. The Editor, i
\ -Sir,— I was somewfaat amused at Mr Daziell's letter in yesterday's issue of your paper, re Castlepoint County Clerk. Mr Daziell must be suffering from some hallucination, or else ibe subject to a very bad memHe isitated that the late Mr Mc,Hutehon acted as clerk and road overseer to the atoive County art a salary of £l6O a, year, when he (Mr Daziell) held the honourable position of chairman to the Oastlepoint County Council. It may ibe of some interest to your readers to 'learn that when Mr Daziell held the above position on the Castlepoint Council, Mr' Ben Leathwick wa& road overseer at a salary of £156 ,per year, and the late Mr MvHwtcbon was paid £l6O a year to act only as clerk to the County. So you see, Sir, instead of the Castlepoint County paying £l6O to its clerk and overseer, as Mr Daziell stated, it was paying as much, as £316 for its clerk and overseer.. Mr Daziell goes on &> say thiat tihe present clerk has absolutely nothing to-do -with the overseer. This may Ebe correct, for I can say without fear of contradiction -tibat the present clerk is absolutely ignorant as regards the dtaties off the ovesseer. andi if I am permitted to say so, the present overseer 'has nothing to do with the clerkship. I still maintain, Sir, that tine present clerk is not entitled to tho position he holds, for, as I have stated ibefore, he has already one position, which I think is ample for a livelihood. Why do not the ratepayer® of this "tin-pot" county wake up and take a hand in this matter ? The ©resent state of affairs is a. disgrace to any ■civilised community. Wfoy not dispense with the services of the overseer i\v.d clerk, and secure a competent and qualified man' who could hold both positions? If tliis was done, Sir,' a lot of unnecessary expense would be .saved, and a better state of affairs would exist. Mr iDaziell .states that I have not the courage to sign my name. If I were to (sign my name in full, Mr Daziell would observe, with displeas-. ure, that I was not one of the unlucky (thirteen tto apply for a clerkship to the Castlepoint County Council. So I will remain, Sis, Yours, etc.. JUSTICE. Tinui, May 18, 1911.
