At the opening of the State Parliament, the Lieutenant-Governor declared that the Government hoped the remodelling of the sinking funds would compass the gradual extinction of the public debt. He forecasted an increase in taxation, including a reduction in the income tax exemption. The Ministers, who were in communication with New Zealand regarding superannuation, upon receipt of the triennial report hoped to be prepared to deal with the problem.
