DUNEDIN, Last Night
The first round of the football matches was continued to-day, in ■splendid weather, University (8 points) beat Alktmibira, last year's premiers (6), Southern (13) beat Zingaii-Richmond (3), Port. Chalmers (10) beat Duuedin (3), Pirates (19) beat Union (6), Kaikorai (6), beat Taieri Rovers (3). WAIRARAPA RUGBY UNION. CUP COMPETITIONS. The Cup competitions uaixTer the auspice's of the Wairarrapa Rugby Union were commenced on Saturday afternoon, in fine weather. Following aire the re suits of the matches played:—
SENIOR. G*LA©STGNE (13) v. MASTERTON (6). The Gladstone and Masteriton seniors met at Piaster ton, on the olid Showground's. Neither of the team's was in very good form, and there,' was a noticeable lack of combination, except occasionally in the, Ma&terton backs. When two-thirds of the first half had gone Nitz scored a try for Gladstone, which was easily converted. Gladstone had the best of the spell'on account of their mfuch heavier forward paek s who never failed to hook the ball out of the scrum, and the half-baok, Tori Raibima, played a gooidj game. No further ssore resulted 1 in the first half. Gladstone werd the first to score after halftime. The try was obtained in the corner, and a splendid goal was kickled from a difficult angle. This placed the visitors wel ahead. ,By hard play Masterton got on their opponents' line, and a pretty!. piece of
passing resulted in Mineti crossing th ; e line. Bannister failed to eonvert. After a very short time the home team was awarded a penalty kick, and Bannister, amid cheers, succeeded in putting the leather between thie posits. A good deal of give and fbake play was indulged in; The Mastertori forwards were vejfy weak, "but the backs were much better, particularly Waugh, who, owing to having received' a kick in the head in the first half, played five-eighth. In spite of this player's good work he was badly missed .behind the scrum. Gladstone added a penalty goal to their score, and the match concluded—Gladstone' 13, Ma-sterton 6. . Mi- E. McKenzie gave every satisfaction as referee.
CARTERTON (3) v. RED STAR (0)
The Carterton and Red Star seniors met at Garten-ton. A very even game resulted in a win for Carterton, who scored the only try of tJie' match just on the call of time. Two of the Red 1 Star players were badly hurt, but they ptit up a wonderful fight against Carterton's heavy forwards. Mr Charters held the whistle.
JUNIOR. GREYTOW ~W) V. MASTERTON (0). The .Masterton juniors got a. very rough handling at , the Masterton Showgrounds by the Gireytown juniors, . a team which is' ■composed of some very heavy men. A very uneven game (resulted in Gireytown's favour by 27 points to'nil. Mr T. Fielding was referee. . CARTERTON (9) v. RED STAJEt (0). Th© Red Sttar juniors were defeated by the Cajntenton juniors, at Carterton, by 9 poin-tSi to> nil. The'.win-, nens' score was composed, of a converted try and a potted goal-THIRD-CLASS. RED STAR (8) vToARTERTON (3). A £airly good miatch. was played on the old Showgrounds between the Red Star and Carterton ■ thirdclass teams, the final score being 8 to 3 in Favour of. (the Stars. GREYTOWN (13) v. MASTERTON (5). The Masterton and Greytown thirdis met at Greytown. - A very rough match, resulted in a wan' for Greytown by 12 points to 5. Welch scored for Masterton and Montgomery converted. Mr Harding- was referee. DAiEEIELD (5) v. LIBERAL (0.) Dalefield defeated Liberal at Balefield hy 5 points to nil. . [ • * '. ■ •
