NARROW ESCAPE.
STEAMER MONOWAI STEERING FOR LAND. (By Telegraph —Press Association.) NAPIER, Thursday. While steaming down the Coast this morning, between Gisbomo and Napier, tho steamer Monowai had a somewhat narrow escape from being wrecked. The weather was thick, and a heavy mist hung over the sea. Her position was regarded as perfectly secure, when suddenly the mist cleared, and it was seen the vessel was heading towards the shore, on which the breakers were plainly visible. The Monowai was then about a quarter of a mile from land, but the engines were reversed, and, after proceeding about a mile out to sea, she headed towards Napier, and arrived without any further delay. THE REPORT UNFOUNDED. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) NAPIER, Last Night. The report of tho Monowai's narrr - escape from going ashore on her tri ) from Gisbomo to Napier is unfounded. The weather was very thick when she entered +he Bay, pud a course was steered for the roadstead anchorage —a nractico always followed in heavy weather —-instead of making for the Breakwater harbour.
