THE COLONIAL INSTITUTE.

POLITICS BARRED. United Press Association —By Electric Telegraph—Copyright. (Received May 11, 8.50 a.m.) LONDON, May 10. The Standard states that after the reporters left Monday's Colonial Institute meeting, Sir John Downer, a j South Australian parliamentarian, was invited by the chairman to speak. He referred to the Australian referendum. Lord Carrington (sharply): "We cannot have politics here under any circumstances. This is a non-political meeting. There will be no politics while I am in the chair." An impressive silence indicated that the sympathy of the meeting was with Sir John Downer, who apologised for unintentionally offending. He said: "I am sorry I have done se.. And I am still more sorry you called upon me to speak."
