CORONATION SUBSIDIES.

If the Govemument is not very careful, it will find itself in difficulties over .the pound for pound Coronation subsidy which it'lias ainnouwoed its intention of giving to local bodies. In one or two townships it is proposed to ask the Government to subsidise "memorials" which are obviously works that should be undertaken solely by the ratepayers. Thfe Mastenton proposal, in regard to a kiosk in tJhe Park, does not come within this category. In one township, however, they wish to utilise the subslidy in assisting to procure a reserve, and in another in constructing a tlioroughfare. These may (be .Teganded locally as "permanent memorials" ; but they are certainly not wiiiat the average individual would consider such.
