MASTERTON COUNTY COUNCIL.

THE ENGINEER'S REPORT. The following report of the Engineer (Mr D. McLachlan) was read at the meeting of the Masterton County Council yesterday : OPAKI RIDING.— Waingawa to Camp road.—Contract No. 252: Getting, carting, and spreading 1000 cubic yards for metal repairs.—This contract has been completed, with 182 chains extra. Black Creek Road.—-Contract No. 249: Building a 27ft span bridge.—■ Some difficulty lias been encountered in getting the piers down to a satisfactory foundation. This, however, has been accomplished, and the .superstructure will be immediately proceeded with. Miki Miki Road. —(Govt. Gt.) Contract No. 257; Metalling, ttc., 2G chains of road. The above contract has been completed. There is still a further six chains which require metalling to cover unsound ground. The representatives for this Riding have agreed that the length be metalled, there being a further grant of £SO, £ for £, which should be available. Railway Road. —Contract No. 256 : Forming 64.08 chains and metalling 19 chains of road.—The above work is reported to have been started this week.

Matahiwi Road. —Contract No. 258: Delivering 875 cubic yards of metal for repairs.—Nothing further has been done since last month's report, there still being 400 cubic yards to deliver, as the contractor is otherwise engaged completing contracts in hand for the Council.

Northern Approach.—Contract No. 238: 26J chains of formation, etc.— The contractor is making steady progress. i

Contract No. 237 —Constructing two bridges over the Waipoua.—The concrete work is completed as far as possible until the old structures are re- ■ moved. The plastering of the piers] has now been commenced. The wooden caps have been affixed to the piers ready to receive the superstructure, on both bridges. Stringers are being ] laid on the northern end of bridge No. 2. The contractor informs me that he will be checked in the progress of the work owing to the nondelivery of timber. Metal'repairs have been effected to 1 the weaker portions of the Lansdowne roads. Levels have been taken for the extension of the formation and footpath between the Llandaff gate and a point immediately beyond the pub}ic school. TE WHITI RIDING Weraiti-Fernyhurst Road. —Contract No. 246: 178 chains metalling with limestone. —The contract has been completed, and is now on maintenance. Masterton-Gladstone Road. —I purpose repairing the weaker portions of above road, with hired teams, by day labour, as the work is of a light nature this season.

RANGITUMAU RIDING.— I have prepared a contract for surface repairs on the Bluff to Rangitumau Road. The work of cleaning out the watertables on the Kaka-amu and Northcrofts Roads is being carried out. WAINUIORU RIDING.— Masterton-Waimata Road. —Contract No. 241: Getting, carting, and spreading 1500 cubic yards of metal. — The above work, which has been caried on in a dilatory manner is now upon completion. Contract No. 251.—Diver's Corner to Taueru Section. —The delivery of the metal on the above contract is reported complete. The construction of two sft by sft culverts (authorised by the Council) on the Blairlogie section of the East, Coast Road, have been finished, and the approaches thereto are being made. UPPER TAUERU.RIDING.— .'

Painting the Glendonald Bridge.— Contract No. 255: The painter has reported his work finished together with the repainting of two 4.oft spans on the Maori garden section of the Te Ore Ore-BidMord road.

Mangarai R-oad. —Contract No. .248. —41.36 chains of formation and culveting. The formation' is well to.wards completion, and the timber for the culverts has been delivered on the ground. Te" Ore Ore-Bideford Road. —Surface metal repairs on above -road liave been completed. . Mr Vennell's request for repairs on the Wairere Road is being attended to by the roadman.

ALFREDTON RIDING.— The extension of metalling 11 chains length beyond the Tiraumea homestead has been accomplished. Contract No. 245. —Boy stead to Tiraumea section.- —Delivering 900 cubic yards of metal has been executed with 200 cubic yards extra.

The improving of a length of 20 odd chains of the Mangatakato Road drain has been made, Mr Rutherford, the owner of the adjoining property contributing, one half the cost. For the purpose of absorbing the Government Grant available, I have made a survey of a length of 54 chains of the Alfredton-Tinui road, extension of formation through Manawa estate. Plans and specifications for the contract are being prepared.

Barton's 'Line. —Specifications for the proposal to extend the metal from the Mangatakato South, have been approved, and authority received for same. It is, however, too late to proceed with the work this season.

Rakanui Road (Thirds account) 6-} chains of extension of the formation has been pegged out. It is proposed that the County roadmen with assistance carry out the work.
