ALLEGED ASSAULT.

DARGAVILLE, Last Night

At the Police Court to-day, Walter Da-vies,, a mill hand, pleaded/ not guilty- on a, charge of assaulting a boy named Albert Rise by kicking him, at Hoang-a, on March 18th. The defendant, iris father and several children; were playing by the boy in question, who struck the defendant's son on the hand. He was told to desist, but defied the defendant, who came out of his house to frighten th? boy, who tripped over a wheelbarrow. Defendant said he never touched the boy. After hearing a quantity of evidence, the Bench dismissed the case, which it declared was a trivial one, and ought never to have been brought into the Court,

MOKAU BRIDGE

WAITARA, Last Night, The Minister of Public Works, accompanied by the members for the district, and county and borough representatives, went to the site of the proposed Mokau Bridge to-day. The Waitara Mail's reporter, who wa.p with the party, telegraphed late this afternoon that a deputation met the Minister at-Mokau, and pressed him for a subsidy of two pounds for... every one found by the local body, but the Minister firmly refused, saying tint the most the Government could .do would be pound for pound. The pp-rty had an experience in Tonga porutu when homeward bound, through the motor-car being stuck in the mud, and horres were obtained to pull the vehicle out. The Minister expected to arrive back in Waitara- at 4 p.m., but at 6 p.m. had not put in an appearance.

CITIZEN'S FAREWELL

DANXEVIHKE, Last Night. This.afternoon, Mr G. Bickford, who has been local manager of tho Bank of New Zealand for fifteen years, was presented at a representative meeting of settlers and townsmen with an address and a handsome souvenir as a mark of appreciation of his untiring services in advancing the interests of town and district. The presentation was made by Mr Hall, M.P. Mr and Mrs Bickford leave on Monday for England on a holiday tour.
