MASTERTON.
The biennial election in connect';*! with the Masterton Borough Co ' n cil was held yesterday. The poll, taken on tlie whole, was more satisfactory than had been expected. The various candidates were very busy during the day, and well over a thousand voters went to the po'l. The result was announced by !h? Returning Officer (Mr R. Brown) shortly before nine o'clock, to be as follows: H. J. O'Leary 828 J. Elliott 743 J. C. Ewington 681 T. G. Hoar v r,7i W. Candy G56 F. W. Temple 643 J. P. Prentice 021 W. Pragnell 602 A. Donald 551 E. Flanagan tV,9 W. Morris ' 519 D. Threa'dwell 376
The first nins candidates on tlu j list were "declared elected. The whole of the retiring Councillors were re-elected, with the exception of Councillor Morris. The varioss candidates present (successful and unsuccessful) returned thanks to those who had recorded votes in their favour. . Mr H. J. O'Leary, who headed the poll, was given a great ovation. He stated that his heart was too full to allow him to speak, but he promised to do his very best for the town. Cr Temple returned thanks on behalf of Or Elliott, and speaking later for himself, expressed the hope that they would do their best to "tali* up" Master ton instead of decrying it. Cr Ewington, in thanking tin electors, said that he would continm to look after the interests of tin electors, feeling that, in so doing, lie wii# looking after his own. Hi strongly advocated closer settlement to assist the town. Cr Hoar referred to the independent stand he had taken in the Council., and said he was proud of the position in which the burgesses ha:.; him. He had oppos?d the northern approach expenditure because he thought they should have one bridge instead of two. Cr Candy expressed his gratitude at the position in which he u placed on his maiden effort. Eo promised to do his best for tin town. Crs. Prentice, Pragnell and Don aid also returned' thanks. Mr E. Flanagan, who was warn-.-ly cheered, specially thanked thcct who ■ had identified themselves with his . candidature, and stated that although defeated, be was not dis, couraged. Mr W. Morris said he felt that, as an old Councillor, he was being given a rest. He thought the burgesses might have also put out go:i:p Cif the other Councillors. :#nd gi; .?r the young fellows a t-lin::ce. Mr D.
