THE REFERENDA
EXCITEMENT IN SYDNEY.
PROGRESS OF POLL
('Received Last Night, 8.50 o'clock.) SYDNEY, April 26. The weather was fine for the Referenda, poll. The booths were crowded at their opening, and again at their close. Voting proceeded: Steadily and quietly throughout the day. A large army of canvassers was at work on both sides. Motor cai'o and other vehicles were freely pressed into the service, and women turned out more freely than was expected. The voting ceased at seven o'clock. Before that hour, crowds had begun to gather in the vicinity of the news-' paper offices, where the returns were posted. Later, the streets in the vicinity were densely packed, the excitement running high as the numbers for and against mounted. The electors were asked to say "Yes" or "No" to whether they desired an alteration in the Constitution, to give the Commonwealth Government power: (1) To deal with the creation, dissolution, and control of corporations, including foreign corporations; also the regulation of wages, conditions of labour, and employment in any trade, industry, or calling; prevention and settlement of industrial disputes, and power to deal with combinations and monopolies in relation to the production, manufacture, or supply of goods or service. (2.) Where Parliament has declared any industry or business to be a monopoly, whether Parliament shall be given power to make the laws for the carrying on of such business >under the control of the Commonwealth, and acquiring for that purpose on just terms any property used in connection with such J industry or business. j To carry the Referenda, a majority of "Yes" votes must be obtain-
