THE STREET LOAN.
The ratepayers of Masterton have a responsibility cast upon them to-day which "they have a* right to discharge in a fearless and unselfish manner. The Borough Council, prompted by the Chamber of Commerce, which claims to have the true interests of the Borough at heart, has submitted a proposal for the raising of a loan of £5500 for the construction of a stn'eet between Queen! and \Chapel Streets, opposite the Fire Brigade station. -Concerning the necessity for this connection, there cannot be two opinions. Its importance tactile whole community has been emphasised on more than one occasion. The point the ratepayers are considering is whether the whole Borough should pay the cost of the undertaking, or whether it should fall upon the shoulders of a few. Obviomly some will benefit more than others by the construction of the street. This, however, is the case in respect to all public works. What the ratepayers have to consider is whether the work is a necessary one, and whether the time is ripe for it to be carried out. In arriving at a decision, they should remember that the cost, spread over the whole community, would be very small, and that delay would increase the expenses, if it did not actually render -the future undertaking of the work impossible. Having these facts before, them, the ratepayers can bo left with confidence to decide the question.
