SPORTING.

TURF MOTES. (By "Zetiano.") General Latour, by Soult-Merry Nip, which I mentioned' last week as' being exceptionally highly. bred, ~ran .second to Booties in the Ellerslie Handicap at the' Auckland meeting. It was his best start, and although he got badly away, was catching the Hon. J. D. Ormond's colt at the finish. General Latour should account for ,some good races in due course. Among the most speedy horses at the Auckland meeting were Miscount and Booties. These two-year-olds (bred and owned by the Hon. J. D. Ormond) simply cleared away from their opponents in their races. The first named should furnish out into a fine three-year-old, and next year will he a leading Derby candidate. Black Reef, who scored at Tauherenikau, was bred by Mr John Cotter, of Greytown, and purchased by Mr B, Speedy as a juvenile. He has been a long time striking form, but may now go on winning. Len Morris, who won the Auckland Handicap on Maxwell, graduated as a rider in the MeGrath stable, Masterton. He is riding well this season, and his services are much in request in the North. Mr Quirk's grey colt, Mildura, wss raced at the Auckland meeting, but found the company rather too select. By winning the Easter and. Autumn Handicaps at the Wairarapa meeting, Gunboat has shown a distinct return to form. He ran disappointingly for some months, hut has now repaid his owner for past defeats. The San Fran-Buby gelding, Dorando, had been practically a failure until lately, even failing to win hack hurdle ©vents- in moderate company. At the Canterbury meeting, however, he accounted for both hurdle events, and in stake money returned his new owner, Mr J. Buckley, twice his .purchase money. Dorando is looked upon as a likely candidate for cross country honours ill the winter, j Descendants of. Soult won seven events at the Auckland meeting, while they finished in places in several races.
