SOUTHLAND CENSUS RETURNS. INVERCARGILL, Last Night. Following are the unchecked census returns for the Boroughs of Invercargill, Campbelltown, Gore, Mataura, and Winton, and the township of Wyndham. Licreases are recorded in each case. The figures for 190G are given first in parenthesis:— lnvercargill (not including Lindisfarne) 1906 (12,507), 1911, 14,159; total increase 1652. Gore (3033), 3258; increase 225. Campbelltown, (1472), 1796; increase, 324. Mataura (1023), 1197; increase 174. Winton (456), 564; increase 108. Wyndham (532), 663; increase, 131. Lumsden (469), 522; increase, 26. A BOYESH FREAK. INVERCARGILL, Last Night. • A lad named Alexander Me.Lennan yesterday, on the main road, picked up a detonator and tried to head it. He could not do so, and hit it with a stone. The explosion blew off parts of his thumb and first finger, and injured his face. He is now in the hospital. A SEAMAN'S DEATH. TIMARU, Last Night. An inquest on the body of J. Grimshaw, who was drowned in the harbour on Saturday night, was held this morning. The evidence showed that the steamer Ngatoro was about to pull out from the wharf, when the deceased, who was a seaman, despite warnings, jumped from the wharf to board her.. He missed the vessel, and fell between the vessel and the wharf. •He was picked up at once, but life was extinct. It was shown that the man had struck his head heavily, either against the wharf or the vessel. A verdict was returned of accidental death.
THE NORTHERN MURDER. EVIDENCE AT .THE INQUEST. PRISONER STILL CALLOUS. WHANGAREi, Last Night. The Native, Kaka, has been remanded till April 26th on the chargof murdering John Freeman, Puhipuhi. The inquest has been resumed. A number of Native witnesses have given evidence, generally verifying Kaka's sudden acquisition of wealth a few days after the supposed date of the murder. The prisoner still appears callously indifferent.
A STRANGE DISAPPEARANCE. NELSON Last Night. On November 4th, George Blancliett, aged 80 years, a resident of Motueka, left Nelson for Wellington by the steamer Nikau, and has not since been heard of. He was not seen to land at Wellington, and efforts to trace him liave failed. Since the death of his wife lie had been despondent,, and it j* feared that he jumped overboard.
