ST. MATTHEW'S CHURCH.
ANNUAL REPORT.
The following annual report from the Churchwardens and Vestry is being presented to the parishioners of St. Matthew's Parish, Masterton :
Ladies and Gent lemon.— Ifc j ;; again our privilege to submit the report and balance sheet in connection with the Church funds for the year ending 31st- March, 1911. The total revenue for the year, excluding the New Church Fund, is £951 5s 4d, the expenditure being £907 10s 9d; that is, the receipts exceed the expendij ture by £43 14s 7d, bringing the , bank overdraft, including outstanding cheques, down to £69 3s 7d. Ordinary offertories have increased In£ll7 4s, and special offertori r show a decrease of £lO Is lid. Y ' : reference to the proposal to Ivni.d a church room at Kuripuni. ir.oi tioned in the last annual ' report, though not yet accomplished, matters have so far progressed that yo.ir vestry have agreed to purchase a site at tue corner of Short Street and i High Sti eet, and thanks to the energy and efforts of the ladies of Kuripuni there is now in the P.O. Savings Bank a sum cf £2B 14s towards the erection of a building. It is very desirable that this, work be carried to completion, during the ! coming year. The Sunday school, ' Choir, St. Barnabas Association, and ' the St. Matthew's Club are doing I good work, and the state of their nn- j ances is very, creditable to all concerned. The Sunday Schools are ini- [ proving steadily, the number of scholars is increasing, and though the number of teachers has also increased there is still room for addi- j tional volunteers for this work. Tb? | Sunday School teachers deserve the j thanks of the Parish for their celfdenying work. New Church Fund. ! —Matters are progressing very satisfactorily, as will be seen from the balance sheet and report issued by Mr J. L. Murray, the Hon. Secretary and Treasurer for this fund. . Practically all the money required to start building is either promised or in hand, and your Yestrv in December last decided to call for competitive designs for the new building, de- j signs to be lodged with the secretary on the 28th February. It was most ! unfortunate that at the last moment [ the N.Z. Institute of Architects is-' sued a circular forbidding them to . compete, the result being that on'y 13 designs were submitted, none of which were, in the opinion of ycv.i Vestry and their assessor, Mr Charlcsworth, suitable. It was, however, necessary to select a fir&t and | second design, and, pay thc.pr=minn:r offered in accordance with the conditions of the competition. It will ro'.v be necessary for an architect to b; appointed. This will he one cf tin first duties of the incoming Vsrtry. The action of the N.Z. luciiiuto rf i Architects in interfering with thv competition at such a late stage bar lost the Vestry not less than £IOO. New Church Acre.— The rents from Queen Street property that are ear- , marked for the New Church Fund, j which amount at present to £2lO j per annum, have paid off the debt! on the site for the new Church, leav- \ ing a credit balance of £l9 16s lid. ! The revenue from this source will bs ] paid in year by year to the New j Church Fund:. Sittings and Pew Rents.— Mr J. L. Murray's report, appended hereto, is very satisfac- / tory, and your Churchwardens can only emphasize his remarks as to the want of sitting accommodation. The Vicarage Alterations.— Towards the close of the year the Vestry decided to enlarge and alter the Vicarage. Plans were drawn by Messrs Varnham and Rose, and a special meeting or parishioners was called' to sanction the expenditure. It was decided to spend the sum of £6OO on the work,, and we are very thankful to state that in a very short time half the amount was promised. 'The work is now almost completed. As is wellknown to the Parishioners ,the Vicar was during the year appointed to the j parochial District of Palmerston 1 North. Your Vestry feel that the Par : sh is to be congratulated on the fact that Mr Watson decided that his duty called him to remain at" St. Matthew's, even at the sa-crifice of personal advancement. We trust that the Parishioners will show their appreciation of the Vicar's decision by loyally supporting him and helping on the work of the parish to which I he is so earnestly devoted. The | thanks to the Vestry and parishion- j ers are also due to (Rev. W. Raine, who has so ably assisted the Vicar in the services in the Church and the general work of the Parish. The j Vestry regrets the resignation of Mr Berry, who did good work in the Sun>day School and out districts. In conclusion, your Churchwardens and ; Vestry feel that the year has been one of solid progress, the result of j earnest and unselfish devotion on the | part of all connected with various organisations of the Church, to whom the grateful thanks of the Vestry and Parish are due. We feel that the : coming year, under similar conditions will, with God's blessing, be one of continued progress andi widening of the influence for good in the parish of St. Matthew. Yours faithfully, E. H. WADDINGTON. J. W. BLACKMAN. Churchwardens. i
