FATE OF FRENCH COLONY.
EXCITEMENT IN FRANCE
(Received Last Night, 5.5 o'clock.) PARIS, April 22. There is a growing excitement in France, owing to the delay in rescuing the French colony at Fez. Captain Morean is forming a contingent at Mehalla Aleazar to relieve Major Bremond's Sherarda troops, Raisuli refuses to allow the Raid's transports to carry supplies to the French. The Government has announced that vigorous measures will, be taken to re-victual Major Bremond. The Government's existence will, it is thought, bo endangered unless vigorous action is taken to save the French officers, whose position is likened to that of General Gordon at Khartoum. A relief force of 4000 natives, under French officers, is at present being formed, but it can only reach Fez by 1 May 3rd if unopposed. ' Various reports have reached here that Fez lias fallen and the garrison been massacred. The newspapers urge decisive measures, without heeding the carpings of the German and Spanish Press. The newspaper "Le Temps" declares that Frenchmen are in danger of death through the ineptitude of the Government. "They must be saved,'' it says, "and the Powers must be told outright what we intend to do." There are a dozen Britishers at Fez, including Mr James McLeod and family, Dr. Verdon and wife, with two children, and two English lady missionaries. There are also two American missionaries, fifty-five Frenchmen, and fivo Germans.
