A RAILWAY PETITION.
Ministers of the Crown are impervious to deputations. They have cultivated a pachydermatous cuticle which is impenetrable by the thrust of the ordinary deputationist. Another weapon must be employed. The Masterton Chamber of Commerce suggests that a monster petition should be brought to bear upon Ministers in regard to the Rimutaka deviation. The idea is an excellent one. If pe-
titions were systematically canvassed, they would be signed by thousands of people between Wellington and) Napier. To do the thing effectively, however, a paid canvasser would require to be employed, and the question of finance would then come in. This should not be a serious item, fo: 1 every Chamber of Commerce in the Wairarapa and Forty-Mile Bush could reasonably be expected to contribute its quota.
