ON THE ROCKS
WRECK OF A PORTUGUESE LINER.
CONFUSION, BUT NO PANIC.
(Received April 21, 8.5 a.m.) CAPETOWN, April 20. Further particulars regarding the wreck of the Portuguese steamer Lusitania, 5557 tons gross, at Cape Point, during a mist are available. The steamer ran on to the rocks in the moonlight, and was crippled in the bow and otherwise damaged. The suddenness of the disaster threw all hands into confusion, but there was no panic. There were two hundred and fifty natives on board. They behaved admirably. Some of the Europeans rushed the boats before the women and children had been comfortably stowed away. The women were scantily clad, some having only blankets and stockings on in addition to their night attire. Passengers and crew, numbering 800, were landed in a famished condition. A fog made difficult the rescue by the British cruiser Forte and a tug. Three persons were drowned. The Lusitania has disappeared.
