A LEAP FOR LIFE.
LADY'S MARROW ESCAPE.
The Auckland Herald gives the following additional particulars of the fire at^the Rev. W. Ready',s house:— Shortly before 10 o'clock Mrs Ready was engaged melting beeswax on the kitchen- stove. She left' the kitchen temporarily, and the beeswax boiled over and quickly ignited, the flames spreading rapidly over the room. A lift, which connected with the diningroom above the kitchen, served as an outlet for the names, which roared through this wooden opening and j quickly spread: from room to room on ! the top floor. Mrs Ready, who was on the top floor, rushed to the stairs in order to leave the burning building ■but tongues of lire leaping up the staircase cut off this means of exit. She then went on to the balcony at the back of the house, and was confronted with the hungry flames on one side and a drop of some 20ft oh the other. The only way to safety was a leap, for life. Mrs Ready took this course, and jumped to; the ground. Some neighbours rushed to her assistance, and she was picked up in ail unconscious condition and re- | moved to a neighbouring house. The only other person in the house at the time was a servant, who managed to escape from the building .uninjured. Mrs Ready soon regained consciousness. She has burns on the face and hands, and it is thought that both her ankles are broken, and she is suffering a great deal from shock. She is progressing satisfactorily at the private hospital.
