REVOLTING CRIME
MAORI KILLS A GUM-DIGGER
ROBBERY THE MOTIVE.
CONFESSION BY ACCUSED.

A revolting crime committed in the depths of the Puhipuhi State forest has been revealed. Kake, a native yov.th, aged IS> was arrested at Kaikohc on Tuer;:lfay on a charge of murdering John Freeman., an European gnmdigger, with whom Kake resided in a whar'?. Suspicion fell on Kake by his: prodigal spending of money, and because Freeman had not been seen for ten days. Kake was brought down to Whakapara (the nearest station to PuhiI puhi) this morning, where he was met by Sergeant Moore and a constable from Whangarei. Accused confessed to the Sergeant that he hit Freeman over the head with a heavy wooden bludgeon, killed him and robbed him of £4O, realised by the sale of gum. He dragged the corpse into a secluded place and buried it. „ ' Accused preferred to show the burial pla?c to the police, who, with "their captive, set out for the scene of in* crime.
