LABOUR CONFERENCE.
CHEISTCHURCH, Last Night. The Trades and Labour Conference opened yesterday. Mr M. J. Reardon (Wellington) was elected President, and Mr,, J. Young (Christchurch) secretary of the Conference. It was resolved that the proceedings, except committee work, be open to the public .and press. A deputation from the Ironmasters' Association, re the tariff on importations, will be received on Tuesday. A sub-committee was set up to dtal with the labour paper. The Executive's annual report stated that a presentation to Mr E. Tregear of an illuminated address and of a purse of sovereigns to Tregear wouid be made on Thursday. The rope,re also dealt with various matters that arose daring the year, and stated that efforts to effect an amalgamation with the Miners' Federation of Labour had been unsuccessful.
