PERSONAL.

Mr E. G. Jellicoe arrived at Auckland by the Morea last week. A London cable states that Earl Spencer, who recently underwent a serious operation, is progressing favourably. The Rev. D. C. Bates, Government Meteorologist, will bo a visitor to Masterton to-day. Mr A. E. Israel, formerly of the Masterton Post Office, and now senior mail clerk at Napier, has been transferred to Nelson, where he will occupy a similar position. The death is announced from Mornington (Dunedin) of Mrs Jane Thompson, one of the oldest residents. The deceased was 84 years of age. A London cable, received this morning, states that Miss Ola Humphries, has been married to Prince Ibraham Hassam, a cousin of the Khedive. The clerical staff of the Napier Borough Council on fliursdiy last presented Mr J. Archer, who has been appointed Town Clerk and Engineer at Masterton, with a travelling case. The presentation was made by Captain W. N. Bower, the Town Clerk, who expressed the regret of the staff at the departure of MiArcher from Napier.

The death is announced from Clyde, Central Otago, of Mr Jeremiah Bradley, son of Mr John Bradley, of Wellington. The deceased was employed in the engineering branch of the Public Works Department.

The Hon. J. Carroll has received a cablegram from Sir Joseph Ward at Montreal: , "All well. Canadians everywhere have shown great kindness and good feeling towards New Zealand."

Miss Mary Conly, the Victorian singer, scored n. success in the oratorio'. "The Messiah" produced bv the Royal Choral Society at the Albert Hall, London.

His constituents at Berwick (Northumberland) are presenting Sir Edward Grey, Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, with his portrait in oils. At the very advanced age of eighty years, Janet, relict of the late Angus Mackay, one of DannevirkeV old residents, passed away at Palmerston North last week. Tho late Mrs Mackay and her husband, who died about twelve months ago, resided in Dannevirke for close upon 30 years.
