THE MINISTER FOR WORKS.
The Pahiatua Herald endorses the ' opinion expressed by the Age con- i cerning the attitude of the Hon. R. \ MoKenzie over the Masterton-Pon-garoa railway. The Herald says:— "A consideration of policy has distinctly been raised, and if the Government has decided that settlement should precede railway construction, the country is certainly entitled to know that it has deliberately adopted that policy. No one will criticise the Government for wishing to make the railways pay, but the people of New ! Zealand have been undpr the impression that railways were being constructed as an adjunct to land settlement, and mat if the country through which the line was to run was sufficiently good to justify the conclusion that the line .would pay when settlement took place, the State was prepared to stand a temporary loss." •
