THE KAITANGANA MINE.
A DEADLOCK
[By Telegraph—Press Association.']
DUNEDIN, April 13
A deadlock between the truckers and the contractor lias arisen at the Kaitangata mine. Some time ago it was decided to let the trucking in tho mine by contract. One section was let a week or so ago, and the truckers were dismissed by tho company and re-engaged by the successful contractor. It seems that another section of tho mine was let by contract at tho end of last week, and notices were posted at the mine that truckers in that particular section would be dispensed with as from Saturday last. The truckers affected held a meeting on Saturday morning, and decided I that until conditions of work, etc.. were satisfactorily laid down, not to seek re-eagagement under tho contractor in this particular section. Consequently on Monday morning the truckers did not offer themselves for employment, and tho miners in that section are unablo to work. Some forty odd truckers and miners were r-t at work on Monday morning. The deadlock, says the Freo Press, has nothing of a "strike" in it, as tho truckers were dismissed,.and consequently have a right to say whether they shall work again under the altered system. Tt is difficult to find out the causes of difference in the matter, but as far as can be learned the truckers are of opinion that if there is any advantage in tho contract system, tlioy, as the men at stake, should have tho opportunity of sharing in such ad-1 vantage. Further interesting developments aro looked forward to.
