The Rev. Robert Wood was a visitor to Masterton this week.

Mr D. K. Logan, who has been on a visit to Queenstown, returned to Masterton on Thursday evening.

The Rev. S. J. Serpell, the newlyappointed minister iu charge of the Masterton Methodist Circuit, commenced his ministry in Masterton yesterday, when he conducted a service in the church, there being a very large attendance.

At Petone on Wednesday last, Miss Ruby Pearl Beale, sister of Mr H. < Beale, of Masterton, was married to Mr James Finlay, youngest son of Mr and Mrs J. Finlay, of Petone.

Mr and Mrs J. F. Maunsell, and Mr Beresford Maunsell, of Lansdowne,, leave this morning by motor-car for Wanganui, where they intend staying a day or two. They will return to "Eridge" on Wednesday.

His Worship the Mayor (Mr J. M. Coradine) has definitely decided that he will not be a candidate for a seat on the Wellington Harbour Board.

Mr C. W. Tanner, of Cross' Creek, has announced his intention of contesting the Wairarapa seat as a supporter of the Ward Administration.

The death is recorded of an old Apiti settler, Mr C. T. Lloyd, at the age of 70 years. For some time past he had been in a low state of health.

Mr G. M. Thompson, M.P. for Dimedin North, has been attacked by appendicitis, and is confined to a private hospital. His condition is not at present considered serious.

Mr H. T. Ellingham, a member of the Wellington Land Board, is mentioned as a probable, candidate for the Pahiatua seat in the Opposition interest.

Another of the very few remaining .settlers \"ho arrived at Nelson in 18-12 passed avvav•■.recently at .Wakefield. Tin deceased, Mr Thomas Khzett, had pas~ed hir"S4th year, having been born at Locksloy. Warwickshire, on November 16th, 1526. Deceased had some experience on the Victorian goldfields, having been at Ballarat. He pfterwards for a time resided at Richmond, but for about forty years had bad his home at Wakefield. Out of a larsre family, four sons and four daughters survive him. The funeral taker, place this afternoon.

Mr Frank Allen. Lambourne, a wellknown member of the staff of the Masterton Borough Council, was married in' tho Congregational Church on Thursday last, to Mrs Cecelia Reid Mackenzie, of Wrigley Street. The best man was Mr F. J. Pauling, and A he bridesmaid Miss M. Cameron. The Rev. A. Hodge officiated.

A Sydney cable, received last night, ftated that Whitty, the Australian rerresentative cricketer, had been operr J ed upon for appendicitis, but was recovering.

In closing his annual report on Knox Sunday* School, the Secretary says:—"We desire to express our deep sorrow at tho demise of the late Mr Robert Johnstone, who whilst on our staff some years ago rendered loyal service to the school, and our hearts go out in sympathy to those who today mourn their loss."

The Tinui correspondent of the Age writes: —'The friends of Miss Nelly Groves will regret to hear that Drs. Mcßae and Gunn found it necessary to perform a serious operation upon her on Wednesday morning. The patient is progressing as well as can bo expected."

In the list of new Justices of the Peace, just gazetted, appear tEe names of Messrs A. E. Copping, R. E. Hornblow, and N. J. Bennington, all of whom were at one time connected with the newspapers of Masterton. Mv Copping is at present at Stratford. Mr Hornblow at Manga weka. and Mr Bennington at Silverstream.

In bis monthly report to the Masterton District High School -Committee, the headmaster (Mr W. H. Jackson) said:—"Miss W. Compton retired from the pupil-teacher staff on the 81st nit., to take up the position of assistant at the Nireaha school. She completed her pupil-teachership at this school in a very creditable man-, jmer and developed good teaching ability during her four years' apprenticeship. . The third assistant master and the third assistant mistress were absent for several days each during the month, through illness. The third assistant in the secondary department i°. absent for two days on leave. Miss E. Robertson has been appointed by the Board to fill the vacancy on tho pupil-teacher staff."

Tbn death occurred at the Master* ton Hospital at 6 o'clock last night of Mr Williamn Clark, of Napier, at the age of 51 years. Three weeks ago tho late Mr Clark came to Masterton to undergo the treatment of Dr. I TV. H. Hosking in the hope of recovery from severe throat trouble. Dr. Hoskir.s was, unfortunately, absent on :\ holiday, and two weeks back Mr -Clark was admitted to tho hospital. The unfortunate gentleman passed away before the doctor returned to Masterton. The deceased gentleman was employed at the Napier railway workshops. For ten years he was train examiner at Waipukurau, being transferred from tlie workshops. On returning to Napier, Mr Clark returned to the workshops at his owh request. He also worked in the Addington workshops, and altogether he has been working fqr the railway Department, for 30 years. The lato Mr Clark was highly esteemed by his fellow workmen. A widow and two children are left to mourn their loss, and the sincerest sympathy of a large circle of friends will be extended to them in their sad bereavement. The body will be taken to Napier for interment on Monday morning.
