MASTERTON COUNTY COUNCIL.

MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly mooting of tho Masterton County Council was held yesterday, theiv being present: Councillors W. J. Welch (chairman), D. W. Foreman, J. Morris, D. J. Cameron, A. Murray, and H. J. Toogood. Apologies for absence were received from Crs. .Beet-ham, Miller, and Kebbell.

A request was made by L. Satchell, of Lansdowne, that the Council take steps to a bate a nuisance caused I y a misplaced or misconstructed culvert near her property.—The matter was referred to tho County Engineer, with power to act. Messrs Wilton Bros, directed the attention of the Council to the condition of tho drains on the road frontage to their property at Rangitumau. —Tho matter was left in the hands of tho Engineer to deal with. Mr Thomas Taylor wrote, agreeing to the closing of the old road at Long Hill, and asking tho Council to take the necessary .steps to close it. —On the motion of Cr. Toogood, it was decided that the necessary steps be taken to close the road.

Mr C. B. Cox, of Alfredton, asked that the Council clear the road from Turkington's to Tiraumea River of slips, logs, etc. —The matter was referred to tho Engineer and Cr. Kebble. with power to act. Tlio Standard Insurance Company solicited a share of the County's accident insurance.—lt was decided to reply that the Council had its own insurance.

Mr G. W. Vermeil, of "Barrymore," wrote, asking the Council to have the road between Mr A. McKay's nroperfcy and his place attended to. — On the motion of Cr. Cameron, the matter was put in the hands of the Engineer to deal with.

The Masterton Borough Council gave permission to fence a corner of Hail way Road and West Bush Road. Mr C. C. Ramsden wrote, complaining of the number of stock wandering 011 the Opaln-Rangitumau and Kakaamu Roads.—The Clterk stated that this matter had been referred to the ranger.

The District Engineer of Roadways notified that instructions would he rriven to have willows cut out of the Kopuaranga stream. The Masterton Hospital Committee thanked the Council for its prompt attention to the matter of improving the road access to the Masterton Hospital.

FINANCE COMMITTEE. The Finance Committee's report was read. The Treasurer's statement showed a credit on tho general account of £2516 12s 2d, and on the local bodies' loans account of £2758. The receipts for the month had amounted to £5293 3s Id. A statement of the Riding accounts, and an approximate statement of tho assets in the several Ridings in. March 31st, were laid before tho Committee. Accounts amounting to £2809 10s were recommended for payment. It was decided that tho salary of the assistant clerk be at once increased to £65 per year, and that it bo further increased by annual increments. Tho report was adopt:-!.
