PROPOSED STOCK BRIDGE.
PRELIMINARY STEPS TAKEN. The Engineer of the Masterton County Council submitted a plan and estimate to yesterday's meeting of the Council of a proposed stock bridge over the Waipoua river. The plan provides for a two-span bridge, twelve feet wide, capable of carrying a certain amount of vehicle traffic. Cr Cameron moved that the Borough Council be asked if it will provide half the cost of erecting the bridge, and that the plans be fent on to the Borough. Cr Foreman: What about the Castlepoint County P This bridge will be largely used by the Tinui stock. Cr Toogoodi said it was understood that a special rate would be struck over the whole of the Masterton County. This was practically decided upon at the last meeting. Even Alfredton had offered to pay its share.
Cr Foreman stated that he would oppose the proposal tooth and nail, it liad never been agreed that Masterton should pay the whole cost. It would be grossly unfair to. saddle Masterton with the cost, when Tinui was so much interested.
Cr Murray said that anything that facilitated the free movement of stock should be encouraged. The Alfredton Riding, though it derived very little advantage, would willingly pay itsquota. (Hear, hear.) Cr Toogood moved that the "amount required to be raised by this Council for the construction of the bridge over the Waipoua river, be a charge on the whole Council. The resolution was seconded by Cr Murray and carried on the.voices, Or Foreman emphatically protesting. It was decided to ask the Borough Council to pay half the cost, and, in the event of its refusing to do so, s-t-eps be taken to set up a commission.
