THE MINISTER FOR WORKS.
VISIT TO PAHIATUA
[By Telegraph—Pmss .Association.]
{ WOODVILIiE, Last Night. The Hon. R. McKenzie, Minister for Public Works, arrived! at Woodrille shortly after five o'clock yesterday afternoon.. He 'had <only time to meet one deputation tfrom the Pahiatua County Council with reference to 1 he construction of a bridge over the I 'iV' Aupapa. stream <©n the road to Makuri.
Mr Ross, M.P., introduced the deputation, tin 1 speakers 'being' Councillors and Mr Ross, who stated ;that although the Government was agreeable to contribute pound for pound up to £6OO, the Pahiatua Council were not in a position *to raise their share, and asked that the Govern- . ment should vote £6OO right out, which would' be sufficient to build -the bridge. The Minister was of ©pinion that ' the Council should bring the matter : again before the ratepayers interest- ; ed, for he was certain tbe Government would not vote the amount straight out. However, iie would visit the locality, before he left the district, and would then be in a better position to consider the matter. The Minister, accompanied by Mr Ross, M.P., and the members of the deputation, then left for Pahiatua. Owing to the uncertainty of the Minister's movements, the large deputation from the local bodies with reference to asking the Government to take over the control of the Gorge Road did not meet here to-day. That deputation will have to meet the Minister in Wellington.
