AN UNHAPPY REMARK.
BY MR W. D. LYSNAR. BESENTED BY SETTLERS. At the conclusion of his address in | Masterton yesterday, Mr W. D. LysI nar, criticising a remark by Mr W. C Buchanan, M.P., that not 10 per cent, of the carcases of frozen meat which were landed in London belonged to the producers, referred to a similar statement made by Mr W. G. Foster. He (Mr Lysnar) had made inquiries, and found that of the output of the Gisborne works, 03.8 per cent, was shipped on account of owners. He had not been able to get details of other companies, but he refused to believe that the settlers in these parts were less self-reliant than those of Poverty Bay. Mr D. McGregor, senr., in proposing a resolution approving of a request for improved facilities for the handling of meat at Home, expressed regret that Mr Lysnar should have passed the r&> marks he did* concerning Mr Foster. The. meeting was prepared to believe that 63 per cent of the Poverty Bay meat was shipped on behalf of owners, but Mr Lysnar and the meeting had a j right, also, to a&ept the word of Mr ) Buchanan and Mr Foster that the producers in other parts were not shipi ping on their own account, j Mr J. C. Cooper, managing director lof the Wellington Farmers' Meat Company, who seconded the motion pro forma, also took. occasion to resent the marks of Mr Lysnar. He pointed out that Mr Foster had taken a great interest in the matter of securing an improvement in the landing of meat at Home, and he was quite satisfied tliiat he was within the mark when ho said that not 10 per cent, of the meat shipped Home belonged to the producers themselves. The Company which he (Mr Cooper) represented had offered inducements to settlers to ship on their own account, but found that they were unwilling to do so.
