CARTERTON.
Mr W. C. Buchanan, M.P., has accepted the position of Patron of the South Wairarapa Poultry Association, and donated a guinea towards the Club's funds. At a meeting of those interested in reviving Thursday football in the Wairarapa, held hera on Monday evening, it was decided to communicate with the neighbouring towns for the purpose of ascertaining whether there was a possibility of forming Thursday Clubs. If favourable replies'are received steps will immediately be taken- to re-organise the Rover Club.
The many friends of Mr S. Gauton, of Hastings, and formerly of Carterton, will hear with pleasure that lie is making satisfactory progress towards recovery from his recent severe illness. The health of Mrs .J. E. Jones, of South Carterton, which has been causing some anxiety of late, is showing a decided improvement. A fire at Dalefield on Monday evening early. destroyed the house and contents occupied by Mr Walter Smith. No one was in the building at the time, Mr Smith being away milking. Very little was salvaged, the insurances being £3OO on the dwellings, and £75 on the furniture. Mr Smith is",a heavy loser, and has the sympathy of the community in his misfortune. j.- r H. Simmonds, formerly of the local Post Office staff, and lately of Grey town, leaves this morning on transfer to the Hufct. Or E. W. Smyth, who, a few days back, decided to take up practice in Australia, has altered his intention in order to meet the wishes of a large section of the community, and will now remain in the district. The local BraE.s Band has arranged a programme of music, which will discourse on the recreation ground on Sunday afternoon next, weather, permitting. This public organisation does not often appeal to the community for help, but on Sunday will take up a collection, which it is hoped will be well supported. Mr H. Catt has donated 10s towards the funds of the Carterton •Brass Band. •'■' '" i The produce, etc., which formed a prominent feature in the local Salvation Army's.festival, were disposedof by auction last evening. At a meeting of the Rechabite Lodge on Monday evening, it was decided, owing to the inconvenient arrangements, to take no part in the celebration in connection with the H.C.R.'s visit to tne Wairarapa on Monday next. General regret was expressed that the arrangements had not been made so as to be convenient for Rechabites in the South Wairarapa. One member was reported upon the sick li.t, and an application for a funeral grant received. Bros. J. E. Jones and S., Gaulton each acknowledged messages of sympathy on account of illness in the family •circle. It was reported that the Hall had been let periodically for a year to a Wellington firm of merchants as sample rooms. Tha new railway timetable, which came into operation yesterday, and which appeals to become niore inconvenient every time an ""improve-.' ment" is made, did not make a good start of running up to schedule time. At a meeting of the Druids' Lodge on Monday night, Brd. A. Johnson was elected to the vacant O.G. chair. One new member was initiated, and
a friend proposed for membership. The retiring KP., Bro. W. Erickson, was presented with a framed diploma and handsome P.D.P. collar. The next meeting was fixed for Easter Tuesday.
