AUSTRALIAN NAVY
LAUNCHING THE WARREGO TREMENDOUS ENTHUSIASM. (Received Last Night, 5.55 o'clock.) SYDNEY, April 4. The cruiser Warrego was launched to-day, amid a-'scene of tremendous .enthusiasm. At a dinner in honour of the event, the Governor-General said Australian money would be well spent in the purchase and management of their own ships. Mr Holman, Acting-Premier, proposed a new toast, "The Australian Navy." The speech was eulogistic of the builders of the vessel. Mr Andrew Fisher, Prime Minister, of the Common weahh, in respondii.?, said it was essentially a fleet for the defence of Australia—its honour and liberty. They were determined that no step should remain untakeu to make their defence to perfect peace. He said it was proposed to ask the British Government to allow them the privilege of having their boats manned by Australians. He hoped to open a navy establishment in Sydney for the education of officers, and training schools for the personnel of the fleet. He repudiated -the idea that Australians should lean upon the British for support. He did not think Australia was staggered by Admiral Henderson's report.
