A girl who had Ven arrested for stealing at. Matlock, Derbyshire, jumped into the river. A policeman followed, and the girl gripped him, refusing to release her hold,.and both were drowned. A second policeman dived repeatedly into fifteen feet of water, but could not succeed in rescuing them. '
■Dr. Mawson, interviewed, severely criticised Amudsen's; action in concealing his plans, in oi'derto become a rival of Scott.; action would affect him in the estimation of scientists. Mawson's own plans had included the landing of a small" party where Scott had landed, but the main parties would be distributed over the coast to the westward.
