A BANKRUPT IMPRISONED.
AUCKLAND, Last Night. A contractor named Thomas Brownlee, Who was recently adjudged bankrupt, was charged at "the Police Court to-day with bringing about his bankruptcy by rash and hazardous speculation. It was stat-ed-that the accused had had a meteoric and disastrous career as a contractor. In twelve months he had entered into' eight contracts. From three of these he had made a profit of £SB, but- on the others he had lost over £IOOO. He had started with a capital of £25, and his liabilities were now between £IBGC and £2OOO. He had paid a dhk-iK of 5s 6d or 5s 9d in the £. it way. urged that there was no minimi i intent, but the Magistrate said (hi:: did not absolve the accused from liability. A sentence of fourteen days' hard labour was imoosed.

The brokers report good competition in the early part .of the sale,' especially for Border Leicesters. The buyers were principally South Canterbury farmers. The sale as a whole was better than had been anticipated.

TIMAttU, Last Night. Sub-Inspector Green, who was recently retired from the Police Force on superannuation, was this afternoon'the guest at a representative gathering of citizens.
