A BANKRUPT IMPRISONED.

AUCKLAND, Last Night. A contractor named Thomas Brownlee, Who was recently adjudged bankrupt, was charged at "the Police Court to-day with bringing about his bankruptcy by rash and hazardous speculation. It was stat-ed-that the accused had had a meteoric and disastrous career as a contractor. In twelve months he had entered into' eight contracts. From three of these he had made a profit of £SB, but- on the others he had lost over £IOOO. He had started with a capital of £25, and his liabilities were now between £IBGC and £2OOO. He had paid a dhk-iK of 5s 6d or 5s 9d in the £. it way. urged that there was no minimi i intent, but the Magistrate said (hi:: did not absolve the accused from liability. A sentence of fourteen days' hard labour was imoosed.
