THE HUIA BIRD.
IS IT ON MOUNT HOLDSWORTH?In conversation wfth an Ago representative yesterday, Mr Charles Bannister stated that the birds seen and heard on the Mount Holdsworth trackby the party from Kopuaranga, were undoubtedly huias, and not tuis. Mr George Bannister -and Mr Jackson ,(Stonestead) are both experienced men in the bush, and would not be likely to be deceived. They whistled to the birds, and they were answered by the ' huias, "You, you, you, who are you?"* and the birds came over to the men, as they do when called by one who can imitate their whistle. Some fifteen or sixteen years ago ..the.'huias wore plentiful in the Tararuas&and gradually disappeared. Thereis plenty of native bush on the ranges ,and is is,mysterious that the -fciiias should become extinct. Not being'a I >T-i of flight, it is difficult to understand what has become of them.
