SOLD TO A SYNDICATE
Mast people have heard of the celebrated Mokau estate in connection with which there has been prolonged litigation extending over 35 years. The estate is now reported to have been i sold by the 120 Maori owners to Mr I, Herman Lewis, of Wellington, for £25,000 and 2000 shares in a Canter!bn'r\\ Ha wire's .Bayy. 'and Manawatu syndicate which, with £IOO,OOO capital, is acquiring the property with the idea of further developing it and its shipping and coalmine interests. The [.-whole estate at the time of the sale, comprising- 56,000 acres; of which 48,-• 500 was freehold, and the remaining i section, partly leasehold, has been leased to the new owners. By the terms of the sale, the native owners acquire I a permanent interest in the property.
