Congressman Champ Clark, the permanent Chairman of the United States Democratic Coi vention, has promised the Democrats a special session in which it is intended to pass the Reciprocity Agreement.
The King Edward Memorial to be erected at Marlborough Gate will consist of a bronze statue with allegorical figures, costing £30,000. A. further £20,000 will be spent in widening the avenue from Knight abridge to St. James' Park.
Professor David states that the Royal Society of London is giving financial assistance to the publishing of the book on Antarctica. Proofs will shortly reach Australia. The book will be copiously illustrated, and the literary contributors include Allan Thompson, of New Zealand.
In the South African Assembly, Sir E. Walton complained of the extravagance of the Government. He urged that whilst the funds were all o J ed they should contribute to the agric xltural development of the country. Mr Merriman supported the charges.
The Secretary of the New South Wales Labour Council, referring to the Melbourne Employers' Fund to protect their interests, says it suggested a return to strike methods. The employers were relying on a false report if they thought that money would protect them in such a case. If there were a general return tp strikes, they would be the tame protracted affairs of the past.
•The Catholic Bishops or Salford and Nottingham and Father Bernard Vaughan applaud the proposals of President Taft and Sir Edward Grey. Cardinal Logue, whilst desiring universal peace, said he has no confidence in the movement while millions of pounds were screwed from the poor, to build Dreadnoughts. He added tha' he was not hopeful that President Taft and Sir Edward Grey would be able to conclude the treaty before better relations with Germany had been established and the Irish question had l>een settled.
