THE CREDIT OF MASTERTON.

tfo'lU EdUor^

Sir, —As you very distinctly pointed out"iri your issue of Saturday last, the statement' made that the town of Masterton is,on the verge of bankruptcy is not calculated to improve the credit of the town, but most decidedly to injure it. For instance, those business firms in other towns doing business with Masterton, not knowing the true state of affairs in this town (and there is nothing whatever wrong with Masterton), and hearing of such damaging statements as have been made would -be induced to withhold their credit (and quite justifiably too, under the circumstances), and the result would be that things would not go too well for Masterton then. Sir, as business men of this town, wo cannot allow the matter to rest at this. Therefore, in •the interests of the town, I would suggest that the Masterton Chamber,of Commerce take the matter up, and appoint a committee to interview all the tradesmen in tlnVtown, and to ascertain their opinion on the financial position of Masterton, altogether apart from the No-License question, and to nublish the result in the press, which • I am sure would bo an emphatic denial to the statements made, and would remove the stigma that is at present hanging over our heads; Then 'the .cxa£t position of affairs could be made widely known, and the credit of Masterton would not be damaged, as it undoubtedly will if the matter is allowed to vest here., The No-License question should be left altogether out of tha question, and an independent petition circulated before it is too late. Sir, as you have always shown a Very keen, interest in the welfare of our 'town, I feel sure you will take up the matter and support it.—l am, etc.. ' 'INDIGNANT TR ADESafAN.'' Masterton, March 2lst, 1911.
