FATALITY AT GLADSTONE.

MR HUGH MITCHELL KILLED

. News Was received in Masterton yesterday of the" death of Mr Hugh Mitchell i at Gladstone; under painful circumstances. The unfortunate man was. riding in a cart loaded with furniture, in company with Mr F. J. Reid, when a portion of the harness broke when ascending a rise at the Gladstone school, causing the vehicle to give a heavy lurch. Mr Mitchell was thrown to the ground, and the wheel passed over him, crushing his ribs in, one of which penetrated his'lungs. Dr. Reid, locum tenems for Dr. Prior, was summoned, but death occurred soon after his arrival.

The deceased gentleman was nearly 50 years of age, and had heen a fine athlete. He was a Wairarapa representative football player for many years, and was one of the team who "played against Stoddart's English team. He also helped to inaugurate the Gladstone Football Club, Mr Mitchell managed. Mr John Strang's "Glenside" property at Gladstone, and Mr H. Raiiish's property at MartinTiorough, at different times.. Latterly he had acted as a cattle doctor, doing a great deal of good Avork. Some eight years ago Mr Angus Mitchell, a brother of deceased, met his death hy being thrown from a horse at South Carterton.
